I was in unfamiliar territory (Maryland!) the other day and my hosts at the National Agriculture Library volunteered to drive us to one of their favorite spots for lunch.
As soon as we walked in the door of Asahi, I could tell we were going to have a good lunch!
Set up for a lunch buffet, one side of the restaurant had Japanese and Korean foods and the other a wide variety of sushi. After taking our seats in a back room and ordering tea, I hit the non-Sushi side of the buffet. I'm not a big sushi fan and prefer to have it in with people I know well who will order for me!
There were a number of choices, but I focused on the shredded Korean beef, kimchi, tempeh, and green beans.
The all you can eat buffet was complimented by friendly service from all the staff.

Rick's Steaks: the Philly Cheese Steak!
Something controversial! What's the BEST Philly cheese steak!?!?!
I have my own preference, which, sadly, can't be found anymore. My uncle John ran a dinner outside of Allentown, PA for many years and made, the best Philly cheese steak. The secret was a special sauce - sadly, I never got the recipe - that was poured over the steak.
So, back to what is possible. Do you do provolone? Whiz? Some other cheese? Well, my personal preference is for provolone. On this day, I had my cheese steak at Rick's Steaks in the Reading Terminal Market in Philadelphia. I went with the steak and provolone. I added peppers and pickles. Very tasty!

Palace at the Ben: Dinner
Earlier in the week I had walked past The Palace at the Ben in the morning and the smell of lunch cooking was irresistible!
After being very sad when I couldn't get reservations on my first try (it was a Saturday night), I was extremely pleased when I was able to get my group of five a table at "The Palace" on a Sunday night.
We arrived for dinner at 7:30 and had the restaurant nearly to ourselves. Our waiter was very attentive - in fact, a little too attentive in pushing certain items when it was clear we didn't want the Indian Masala Tea. All was forgiven when one of his entree suggestions, the Navratan korma, turned out to be the hit of the evening.
Other items that meal included the lamb roganjosh, chicken mutali, and the other major winner of the night, vegetarian biryani. The favorite starter of the night was the assorted samosa (vegetable, chicken, and panir). The selection of breads (including the onion kulcha) was excellent as were the accompanying chutney, papadam, and raita.
The special drink, a pomegranate, ginger, and gin concoction, was not to my taste.
The casual elegant atmosphere made for a fine evening out.

Fuzio Universal Pasta: Lunch
Fuzio Universal Pasta is a small chain (locations in the California, Nevada, and Missouri (one of these things is not like the other!).
I visited the Fuzio location on Chestnut St. in San Francisco. It was well after the lunch rush and my party had the full attention of the wait staff.
I had the soup/sandwich combo and selected the ginger carrot soup and Italian club. The soup was quite good, but a little heavy on the ginger (in case you're not a big ginger fan - but then why would you order this in the first place?). The Italian club was on grilled focaccia with chicken, salami, bacon, and cheese. Just the right seasonings (Caesar dressing) topped it off.
A tasty meal for a good price.
Dish: carrot ginger soup and Italian club grilled sandwich, "light tropical" ice tea

Hotel del Sol: Breakfast @ poolside
Well, it's not really a restaurant, but it is food. The Hotel del Sol in San Francisco's Marina District is an excellent place to stay for business or pleasure.
One of the treats is the Continental breakfast offered in the lobby. Take a donut, muffin or other treat back to your room, or, weather permitting, sit under the palms at poolside and enjoy.
Dish: coffee, orange juice, banana, chocolate covered old fashion donut

Hello World!
UDC 641 is the Universal Decimal Code (library classification) for " Food. Cooking. Dishes". I like to go out to restaurants whenever I have a chance and thought I'd collect my own personal reviews of places that I've liked and dishes that I've enjoyed.
Reviews won't be in chronological order, and I'll post things about restaurants that I may have visited in the (recent) past.
Please visit my "Table Mates" for other food, cooking and restaurant related blogging!
Bon appetite!
p.s. for the curious, the Universal Decimal Classification is a system of library classification developed by the Belgian bibliographers Paul Otlet and Henri la Fontaine at the end of the 19th century. It is based on the Dewey Decimal Classification, but is much more powerful. It uses auxiliary signs to indicate various special aspects of a subject and relationships between subjects. It thus contains a significant faceted or analytico-synthetic element, and is used especially in specialist libraries. UDC has been modified and extended over many years to cope with the increasing output in all disciplines of human knowledge, and is still under continuous review to take account of new developments.
