Galloping Gourmet: Vienna, Austria

Vienna Overview

Attending a series of intense, morning to evening meetings is not the best way to enjoy the culinary treats of Vienna. All but one of my dinners was under the constrained circumstance of having to seat 15-20 people. The one dinner outside the group environment, was fabulous.

I also didn't get to take full advantage of the coffee house culture, only making it to three different ones (breakfast, lunch, drinks). I was able to hit one of the prime tourist spots, the Cafe Sacher and indulge in the famed torte.

I had just a few days to explore Minneapolis and hoped to get a nice India meal or two and also hit a few local spots that had either received good reviews or been recommended by friends. I also planned to add a few notches to my Starbucks list.

I'm pretty sure I didn't even scratch the surface of fine dining in Minneapolis. I know I passed by a couple of places that might just call for a return visit.

But for now, here's my culinary tour of Minneapolis:

Breakfast

• Starbucks. I had carefully mapped out a few local Starbucks before coming, so I was quite surprised to not find many of them! Where did they go? Were they downsized?
  
  Now, in case you didn't know, Minneapolis can get chilly (wind chill of 19 F on April 6, 2009 in the morning), so there are lots of interior shopping and eating areas connected by sky bridges. So, unless you knew where to enter the otherwise non-descript building (e.g. IDS Center) you didn't know the Starbucks was there!

Staying in the Disney area of town - but not actually every going to Disneyland, I don't think I really hit all the culinary highlights of Anaheim, let alone Orange County!

In addition to the usual Starbucks, mostly in hotels, I also had a tasty lunch at the Hilton (a very good burger) and also a nice breakfast at the Clarion Hotel (once the buffet, one ordered).

I also stopped in at a Carl's Jr, but it wasn't the same as I
recall from my youth. Since the Carl's Jr. didn't really have breakfast, I had to go down the street to the Denny's (for the "All American Breakfast).

The Galloping Gourmet - St. Louis Style!

I like to think that the Washington area has some pretty good eating options, but after a couple of trips to St. Louis, mile for mile, bistro per capita, the Gateway to the West has some of the best eats around.

I'm not sure if my friends Chris and Doug are really typical St.Louians (spelling????), but if they are, it's not hard to see why St. Louis can support so many fine eating experiences.

Below are the places that I've had the chance to visit; I'll fill in with more details on all of them over time, but if you are visiting St. Louis, there's not a loser in the bunch. Right now, if I had to pick one, it would probaby be Koko (but maybe that's just because that's were I was last!).

I can't wait for my next trip and some more great eating!
